Understanding the Technology of the Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror

One of the latest technologies in automotive innovation is the auto-dimming rearview mirror. The automobile enthusiasts at Kia of West Nyack want you to be informed about all of the features of your vehicle. We welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you have about the technology of the auto-dimming rearview mirror so that you can best leverage its power to keep you safe on the road.

This electrochromic mirror works by fighting potentially dangerous glare. This glare, called the Troxler Effect, occurs when the lights of an oncoming car temporarily impair your vision and reaction time.

The technology in auto-dimming rearview mirrors detects glare and sends a charge through an electrochromic gel. This process occurs through the use of embedded ambient light sensors that work in tandem with a microprocessor to detect glare from approaching headlights. This charge restricts the amount of light that can reflect onto the face of the driver.
