Timing Belt Operation And Maintenance

Almost all vehicles have either a timing belt or a timing chain. Most vehicles have a belt, but some newer cars still have timing chains. The timing belt keeps the camshaft and crankshaft working in synchrony. If the belt breaks, your engine can suffer major damage.

If your vehicle has a timing chain, it does not need to be changed. Most timing chains will last for as long as you own your vehicle. Timing belts are made out of heavy rubber. They will wear out over time. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that the timing belt be changed anywhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles.

There are some signs you might notice if the timing belt is going bad. You may notice a high-pitched whining sound from the motor if the timing belt is going bad. On some vehicles, the vehicle will get harder and harder to start if the timing belt is going bad.
